Frequently asked questions

Why can’t a normal word counter count Thai?

Thai is written without spaces between words; spaces mark the end of phrases or sentences. Ordinary counters split on spaces, so a whole Thai sentence counts as one “word”. We use the browser’s built-in Thai word segmentation (Intl.Segmenter), which splits text using a dictionary, then count only words, not spaces or punctuation. Results may differ slightly from other software for compound words, names and loanwords.

How are Thai characters counted?

We show both. The character count counts each letter as you see it on screen, so ผู้ (a consonant with a vowel and a tone mark stacked on it) counts as 1. The other count treats every vowel and tone mark as a separate character, so ผู้ counts as 3; that’s how SMS and many input fields measure length.

Does it work for English text?

Yes. English and other languages that use spaces are counted normally, and mixed Thai–English text works too.

How is reading time calculated?

We assume a reading speed of about 200–250 words per minute and show a range. Academic or difficult text may take longer.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. Counting happens entirely in your browser. Your text isn’t sent or saved anywhere and disappears when you close the page.
