Frequently asked questions
What is the Buddhist Era, and where will I see it?
Thailand officially counts years in the Buddhist Era (B.E., พ.ศ.), which is 543 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar. You’ll see B.E. years on Thai ID cards, driving licenses, visa and work permit paperwork, leases and contracts, bank documents and government letters.
How do I convert a Thai year to a Western year?
Subtract 543: B.E. 2569 is A.D. 2026. To go the other way, add 543: A.D. 2000 is B.E. 2543.
How are dates written in Thai official letters?
Government letters typically use Thai digits, written like “วันที่ ๒ เดือนพฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. ๒๕๖๙” or, in the letter heading, “๒ พฤศจิกายน ๒๕๖๙”. The tool produces both. Check your organization’s own style rules as well.
What are the Thai month abbreviations?
ม.ค. (Jan), ก.พ. (Feb), มี.ค. (Mar), เม.ย. (Apr), พ.ค. (May), มิ.ย. (Jun), ก.ค. (Jul), ส.ค. (Aug), ก.ย. (Sep), ต.ค. (Oct), พ.ย. (Nov), ธ.ค. (Dec). Short dates use the last two digits of the B.E. year, e.g. 2 พ.ย. 69 is 2 Nov 2026.
Can I just subtract 543 for years before 1941?
Not always. Before B.E. 2484 (1941), the Thai new year started on April 1, so dates from January to March of those years need 542 subtracted instead. This tool uses the current calendar (new year on January 1) for every year.
